Laptops are a new breed of extremely small and light
(approximately 2 lbs) mobile PC's. Often called MIDs
(mobile internet devices), due to their extreme portability, the
mini laptop is also commonly referred to as mini-notebooks,
sub-notebooks, and mini-notes. These are inexpensive,
lightweight laptops that have been stripped down to the bare
minimum. If push came to shove these laptops could handle
web browsing and document managing with no problem but hardly
anything else.
There are other lightweight options of course, one being the
Ultra-Portable Laptop, which was once the smallest and
lightest breed of notebooks. These laptops are similar to
Mini's, in that they are extremely light, but tend to come with
more robust features and a higher cost. Some of the
flagship ultra-portable notebooks are the Macbook Air and
Lenovo's Thinkpad X300, which range in cost between $2,500 and
$3,000 each.
Remember, Mini Laptops aren't
designed to compete with their bigger counterparts such as
ultraportables or mobile pc's. However if your traveling
needs are modest and you're interested in something lightweight,
a Mini-Laptop might be a good fit in your travel bag.
