Wireless Technology for Laptops and Tablets

There are several technologies that allow you to connect wirelessly to the internet and other networks.

Rent Our Laptops offers AirCard and Wireless Internet Card Rentals (also known as Mobile Broadband Cards) for connecting to the internet wirelessly and on the go.

Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi)

Wireless Laptop and Tablet Technology WiFi technology is a mechanism that allows electronic devices like laptops, video game consoles, tablets and smartphones to exchange data across a network or the internet. Access points, or WiFi Hotspots, depending on its security settings, allow you to connect to specific networks in order to access the internet or private networks.

A Wi-Fi-enabled device can connect to the Internet when within range of a wireless network that is connected to the Internet (Wi-Fi LAN). The coverage of one or more (interconnected) access points can comprise an area as small as a few rooms or as large as many square miles. However, coverage in the larger area may depend on a group of access points with overlapping coverage.

Wi-Fi provides service in private homes, high street chains and independent businesses, as well as in public spaces at Wi-Fi hotspots set up either free-of-charge or commercially. Organizations and businesses, such as airports, hotels, restaurants, and coffee shops often provide free-use hotspots to attract customers.

3rd Generation Mobile Telecommunications (3G) is an ITU specification for the third generation of mobile communication. Analog cellular was the first generation and digital PCS was the second. 3G is a standard for mobile phones and mobile devices like tablets and includes wireless mobile internet service. 3G also includes standards for reliability and data transfer rates. 3G wireless networks are required to have speeds of at least 200 Kbps. However, most recent 3G networks perform much faster than this at about 380+ Kbps.

4G (LTE or WiMAX)

4G is the fourth stage of broadband mobile communication that will supercede 3G. According to the ITU, 4G requires mobile devices to exchange data at 100 Mbps. 4G is more of a marketing term due to the fact that technically speaking, 4G is not possible without further advances in mobile communication. In order to be considered 4G, a network must take advantage of Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM). These 4G data networks either use Long Term Evolution (LTE) or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX). When fully implemented, 4G is expected to enable pervasive computing, in which simultaneous connections to multiple high-speed networks will provide seamless handoffs throughout a geographical area

All Laptop Rentals come equipped with WiFi. All Tablet PC Rentals and iPad Rentals come equipped with WiFi with optional 3G service. Only select rentals offer 4G service and are subject to availability.
